Space Radiation Organ Doses for Astronauts on Past and Future Missions
نویسندگان
چکیده
We review methods and data used for determining astronaut organ dose equivalents on past space missions including Apollo, Skylab, Space Shuttle, NASA-Mir, and International Space Station (ISS). Expectations for future lunar missions are also described. Physical measurements of space radiation include the absorbed dose, dose equivalent, and linear energy transfer (LET) spectra, or a related quantity, the lineal energy (y) spectra that is measured by a tissue equivalent proportional counter (TEPC). These data are used in conjunction with space radiation transport models to project organ specific doses used in cancer and other risk projection models. Biodosimetry data from Mir, STS, and ISS missions provide an alternative estimate of organ dose equivalents based on chromosome aberrations. The physical environments inside spacecraft are currently well understood with errors in organ dose projections estimated as less than +15%, however understanding the biological risks from space radiation remains a difficult problem because of the many radiation types including protons, heavy ions, and secondary neutrons for which there are no human data to estimate risks. The accuracy of projections of organ dose equivalents described here must be supplemented with research on the health risks of space exposure to properly assess crew safety for exploration missions. https://ntrs.nasa.gov/search.jsp?R=20070010704 2017-08-15T05:56:54+00:00Z

Organ/Tissue Doses Measured with Solid-State Integrating Dosemeters in a Low-Earth-Orbit Space Misson
INTRODUCTION For future space missions at the International Space Station, health risk to astronauts caused by space radiation needs to be properly quantified and controlled. The radiation field in space is low-dose rate, but the accumulated dose can be high during long-term missions (1). Radiological risk under such a low dose-rate exposure, i.e. stochastic effect, has generally been evaluated...

Background: Astronauts will be exposed to both chronic space radiation and acute high doses of energetic radiation of solar particle events in long-term deep space missions. The application of radioprotectors in space missions has basic limitations such as their very short time window as well as their acute toxicity and considerable side effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate ...
متن کاملSpace radiation and cataracts in astronauts.
For over 30 years, astronauts in Earth orbit or on missions to the moon have been exposed to space radiation comprised of high-energy protons and heavy ions and secondary particles produced in collisions with spacecraft and tissue. Large uncertainties exist in the projection of risks of late effects from space radiation such as cancer and cataracts due to the paucity [corrected] of epidemiologi...
متن کاملPoor Understanding of Radiation Profiles in Deep Space Causes Inaccurate Findings and Misleading Conclusions
The radiation environment in deep space, where astronauts are behind the shelter provided by the Earth’s magnetosphere, is a major health concern. Galactic cosmic rays (GCR) and solar particle events (SPE) are two basic sources of space radiation in the solar system. The health risks of exposure to high levels of space radiation can be observed either as acute and delayed effects. Zhang et al. ...

The risk of leukemia and other radiation oriented diseases for astronauts increases with exposure to cosmic radiation. During the space missions, the blood and immune system change and the bones are affected by osteoporosis. In this research, a model, based on the human blood system, is presented for the study of the microgravity and the space radiation effects on the blood cells. This model is...
